I was unsure as what to expect from this cd when I received it as Steel Threads were unknown to me at that time. And, I was more than a little surprised not to hear hard and heavy rock or heavy metal assaulting my ever-increasingly fragile eardrums, (old age and way too many gigs stood near the speaker stacks), but instead found them caressed by the subtly charged vocals of singer/guitarist Neil Wardleworth. Steel Threads are a, well… different kind of rock band. They blend their acoustic sound with a bit of folk, (yes FOLK), to produce something that I have not listened to before, and I find myself really liking! Alongside Neil are Stuart Eastham on Double Bass and Cliff Woodworth on Fiddle, and both musicians compliment both each other and Neil sublimely. At one end of their spectrum the sound is haunting, yet gripping, and then at the other with Gave You A Thought there is that rockier melody with a hint of folk thrown in for good measure. The album has something in every track to keep you tapping your toes and nodding your head along to it. To be honest, it’s a refreshing listen. Especially if you’re looking for something to ease back and relax to, either in the car or just kicking off your boots at the end of the day and watching the world go by. This is a debut album that I definitely recommend, and if you have a mild penchant for bands such as The Waterboys, The Levellers or even Crowded House and a bit of Hugh Cornwell, this is something you ought to try out.

Timing Is Everything was released on June 4th through Rocksector Records, and they can be heard on Phoenix FM this Saturday (June 30th) and seen the same evening at Lewins Bar in Halifax town centre. Get along and see them, and support live music.
